The Maid and the Socialite
by Lynda Drews
Non-fiction.

298 pages
This book was written by a local author here in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was written about a prominent doctor, his maid and his wife from the 19th century. Dr. Minahan was a very well known and respected doctor in this area but this book brought about a truly dark past of his and an obsession with syphalis. It uncovered his history of many lies of trying to cover up a rape and a force abortion upon his maid which later brought apon numerous health implications.
Then we were introduced to his his wife, Mollie and later their two boys. Dr. Miniham's obsession drove his entire family away through his torturous narsacistic behavior.
The best part about this book was after finishing the book, our book club when and toured the homes in which these people in the book lived. It really brought the book to life. I hated the way Dr. Miniham was allowed to treat his wife and made. But back in the 19t century, women were still considered propery. We were not allowed to vote, or own land. Mollie was really starting to become progressive in her thinking in divorcing Dr. Miniham.

Historical Fiction
336 Pages
This was a book that kept my emotions flipping from shock to fear, to tears to love throughout the book. I love historical fiction, especially books around WW2 and the holocaust. However, this book hit a different part of the war that I haven't learned about yet. The Hochland Houses. Where women were raped and forced to have children to keep the population growing. A lot of the records of these women and children were destroyed. But there was enough information to piece together to find out about the trauma, birth defects, and the extensive testing done on the children as well during this time.
It scares me to think that there were and are people this evil in the world that are capable of this and that so many just went long with it. The amount of women and children that suffered during this time and even after at the hands of such evil is incomprehensible.

Famous Last Words

Thriller 336 pages
This book was a struggle bus for me. I was disappointed because I normally have loved Gillian's thriller books. But I could not get inot this one. Hence taking three months to finish it. It had a good story line. It's issue was it just dragged on and on and on.
